Best Halal restaurants on Tastecard

2

Eating out is a passion of mine, but it’s an expensive one and I’m always on the lookout for a meal deal or special offer. When it comes to deals then my trusty Tastecard that I’ve had for years comes into action.

Not only have I save 100’s of pounds over the years I have also discovered and eaten some great food! The tastecard basically gives you massive discounts off your final food bill.

How does it work?

There are loads of places to choose from and each restaurant has a different offer, some give 2 for 1 for 2 people, meaning if you get a total of 2 starters, mains and desserts you only pay for 1 and some give a sweet 50% off the whole food bill for between 2 to 10 people. Any day apart from Friday and Saturday.

My savings!

You get the card, search for a place you want to go to, check the rules, normally you have to call and book but some places you don’t need to like Pizza Express or Banana tree, show your card when you ask for the bill, then sit there with a smug look on your face as you count the money you saved!

So I have decided to make a list of some great restaurants that offer halal food and also are on tastecard.

Because I use this card so much, the people over at tastecard are offering readers a special offer.

Special Offer

I’ve teamed up with the people at tastecard, who are offering:

Followed by an annual fee of £34.99

Beef and Birds [Permanently Closed]

Date of Visit: Sept 2018

I visited Beef and Birds recently to check out their food and see what that had to offer. Its been open for about 7 months, I was going to visit it then, but felt that all I was eating at the time was burgers, but it’s been a while since I’ve had a burger so I thought I’d pay a visit. Located in the curry capital of town Brick Lane, not where you would expect to find a burger joint.

The food on the menu is focused around beef and chicken burgers. Beef used in the burgers is 28 day dry aged.

Starters

I tried a few different items like the chicken wings, which included the chocolate BBQ wings, Cauliflower wings and the cheese balls, nothing here was worth even taking a picture of! Didn’t really like the starters.

Mains

I tried a lot of items on the menu, pictured is the Vintage Cheese Burger (£8.95). Now if you have never had a BigMac before this is what it tastes like. When I took my first bite it took me back to eating Big Macs (halal of course) so I liked this burger, simple in flavours, but tasted good. I’ll give it an 8/10.

My friend tried the chicken burger, he gave it a 6.5/10. I didn’t try it.

I also tried a few other items like the Beef Short Ribs. Although the meat was tender, it lacked depth and body in flavour, the taste got boring very quickly, its best to share this dish.

The burger I had was nice, it was the closest thing to a Big Mac you can get in London for sure, taste wise. There is still room for improvement on other dishes, but its a place that’s worth a shout for a burger if are in the area.

There are decent options here, but it’s not the best in terms of the London halal burger scene if you are in the area then its worth a try, for the beef, if you want a chicken burger I’d head to Mother Clucker which is nearby.

I was invited, the meal was complimentary

Rabbit Hole

Date of Visit: October 2018

Quick Review

Rabbit Hole Cafe is a newly opened cafe in Holloway, they have loads of things on the menu. Food is simple and very cheap.

MENU

There is a MASSIVE menu as shown below. Full English Breakfasts, Lasagnas, Pies, Shakshuka, Burgers, Sunday Roasts and loads more food that you couldn’t eat when you were a kid. But just in case, they have a chicken curry too.

For drinks, me and my friends tried some smoothies, these are actually really good, and probably the best smoothies I’ve had.

With the large amount of food on the menu, it was tough to pick what to eat, but me and my 2 friends got Full English Breakfast, Lasagna, Shakshuka and Chicken Escalope.

The portions are very generous and the food was good and simple.

I was invited here and my meal was complimentary

Lanes of London

There’s only a handful of places in London where you can find a Halal Sunday Roast, its a British classic, it is relatively simple to construct, you throw and a couple of vegetables in the oven with some meat protein and boom, you are done, but it’s not a dish that you (most of you) or I had growing up, so it’s nice to experience a different kind of food.

Located on Park Lane and near Marble Arch Lanes of London is an upmarket hotel restaurant that has now begun offering halal options. The surrounding area is synonymous with attracting Muslims from overseas like the Middle East it’s a smart move to serve up British food available for the Muslim Market. The venue is spacious and has a chic, classic and elegant atmosphere that really creates a nice relaxing environment. It’s ideal for a romantic dinner or a catch up with friends. They also offer afternoon tea as well.

I decided to try one beef and one chicken roast. Available for a reasonable £18 is a Halal Chicken Roast with red cabbage, roast potatoes, broccoli, carrots and Yorkshire pudding. Also available is the beef instead of the chicken, however, the chicken does not require pre-ordering, however, the beef does need 48 hours notice.

It also was my birthday, so I was looking forward to some good food. I started the afternoon with some Drinks, off the menu, you can get the barman to make you any drink you like, I asked for a virgin strawberry mojito and a “fancy drink with elderflower” was my request. Both drinks were great, refreshing, not too sweet and well balanced.

Drinks

On the menu, the roast was meant to actually come with a whole baby chicken, but on the day I was told that they ran out so we were given a chicken breast instead.

I got the beef and my dining companion got the chicken. The plate looked good, a nice giant Yorkshire pudding, fluffy roast potatoes and of course the striploin of beef cooked medium rare on request. I really enjoyed the meal, the beef seasoned well and cooked as requested, the gravy made from halal meat stock added to the flavour, although it was not the deepest and flavoursome beef, it was still very enjoyable.

I was not expecting much from the roast chicken breast, but I was surprised with how good it was, in fact, I prefer it to the beef! It was served with crispy skin on and despite only being seasoned with salt and pepper it had a deep rich roast chicken flavour, something you get when you use good quality free range chicken, it was also very tender, juicy and cooked evenly (which is tricky with breast due to the uneven thickness)

We also got a couple of extra sides of creamy mash potato and some of the best sweet potato fries I’ve ever had. Yes. The sweet potato fries were awesome.

Beef Roast

I was totally stuffed, I did go out the night before and had a big meal, but this was the next time I ate, I thought that the food wasn’t going to be enough but it sure was.

A very enjoyable birthday lunch was rounded off with an unexpected birthday dessert and the staff even sang happy birthday for me. The service was very good, our waitress was very friendly and upbeat, whilst providing attentive service.

Based on the location, venue, price, service and quality of food I definitely recommend trying this place for the Sunday Roast, I’ll be posting my review of the Spring menu soon.

Remember, if you want the Beef option for the roast you need to pre-order in advance.

Zheng

0

Date of Visit: 19th June 2018

People often ask me what my favourite t type of cuisine is and my reply has always been Malaysian. Although it’s not a cuisine I have a lot of (mainly because there’s a lack of good quality restaurants out there and it’s long to too a beef rendang at) it’s a cuisine I really enjoy. Its a mixture of different food influences from Indian and Chinese with a mix of other South Asian and Middle Eastern influences.

So I was happy to get an invitation to check out Zheng and Malaysian / Chinese restaurant in Chelsea which offers loads of halal options.

The restaurant is located in Chelsea and prices are mid-range as seen on the menu. The decor is modern and elegant and suitable for date night, dinner with friends or a business meal.

Drinks.

I don’t normally get mocktails but opted to try a few, I should have stuck with water. Drinks were definitely not made by an experienced bartender or mixologist.

Avoid.

Menus

After looking at the options on the menu I decided on the following, here’s what I thought of each dish.

Starters

Chicken Satay

Chicken Satay

A dish I loved having on the streets of Malaysia, I’ve been 3 times and it’s a popular street food. I tend to always order chicken satay, but I find that if it’s not made with the fattier cut of chicken like thigh or leg then it’s not as juicy. Here it’s chicken breast, however, it was tender and juicy and it tasted great. So a good start

8/10

Chilli salt n pepper squid

Chilli salt n pepper squid

Another good dish, fresh good texture and the squid were well cooked and not rubbery.

8/10

Roast Duck

One of the reasons why I wanted to visit here was to try their roast duck, I had seen a picture of this a few days before and it looked awesome… And it didn’t disappoint!

Roast Duck

The Duck was cooked perfectly and had everything you want in a roast duck, tender, juicy and delicious. Totally recommend getting this. The sweet Chinese flavours just worked really well, creating a memorable experience with each bite. (by the way, I’m writing this review 3 months after my visit and I can still recall this experience)

9.5/10

Mains

There’s a lot to choose from so here’s want I ended up getting

Mango chicken

Mango chicken

I tried to be different and adventurous and get something that I’d usually wouldn’t order. Fried chicken with mango? Yep, different but I liked the mix of sweet and savoury, the mango worked well and the chicken was well cooked and didn’t feel heavy.

7/10

Beef Rendang

On the menu, there’s 2 different type of beef rendangs, so I went for the standard one. A beef rendang is a classic dish one of my favourite, it’s a slow lamb or beef cooked in spices and coconut milk for usually at least 4 hours so the flavours really get some depth.

Beef Rendang

When it arrived the colours didn’t look right it also didn’t taste right either, it lacked the classic deep flavours of rendang spices and coconut milk, so after a quick chat with the service staff I sent this back and I got the rendang tok.

Beef Rendang Tok

When this arrived it looked like how I would expect a deep rich brown and this definitely was an improvement. The flavours were richer and had a better taste, but it still lacked depth, I feel that perhaps it wasn’t slow cooked for the required time. I was told they only slow cook it for 2 to 3 hours. Explains why traditionally its cooked for 4 to 6 hours!

6.5/10

Also got a noodle dish…

Zheng offers some good food in a nice modern fine dining environment. I really enjoyed the starters and the roast duck is worth making the trip alone, I totally recommend getting that!

Prices are mid-range and the mains courses were not as good as I would have thought for the price, but it’s a good place to try out for fans of Malaysian and Chinese food. Good for date night, family dinner, dinner with the girls or a business dinner. I Recommend the Roast Duck and Chicken Satay. Food is halal, certificates available and are on display when you walk in.

I was invited to review and my meal was complimentary

Mr White’s English Chophouse

One of the things I like about the halal scene right now is that the new generation of restauranteurs share a similar vision like myself and want  quality food and experience that we didn’t get to try when growing up, like a few years could you go to a British Restaurant and safely order a French-inspired halal dish? No, you couldn’t, but in recent years, the opportunity to try something that’s not a curry or kebab is getting easier.

I digress. Mr White’s English Chophouse is a new restaurant located inside the New Road Hotel, the restaurant is looked after by the same group the own The Marco Pierre White steak chain of restaurants, but the difference is the restaurant is managed by the owners of the hotel who are Muslim and insisted on a fully halal menu.

First things to say is the venue is lovely and has a lot of history and character. It used to be a garment factory but now converted into a hotel and restaurant.

I was expecting the menu to offer up a few more options, but I decided to order the following.

Menus

Starters

The options are very non-meat based and have a French influence. I opted for the beetroot salad and smoked salmon.

I found the starters light, simple but also rather underwhelming. They felt like some basic ingredients on a plate with nothing bringing it together, especially with the beetroot salad, which I felt could have used a sweet element such as honey or molasses to bring a balance to the dish.

Mains

Of course, the focus is on the red meat, there are a few choices of steak to pick from. I decided on the ribeye, medium.

Steak, Ribeye

It looked great and was cooked perfectly, however, there was a big issue. It was very over seasoned with salt. It tasted like it was dipped in a bed of salt it was that bad! I couldn’t eat it. Now on any other occasion, I would have sent it back straight away. But I was hungry and didn’t want my dining companion to eat alone. Also, because my meal was complimentary, part of me felt bad, I really shouldn’t have as I’m providing free advertising at the end of the day and giving up my time as well. Note to self. Return food if it’s not good, even if it’s complimentary. So purely on the fact that it was over seasoned and unable to eat I’m scoring it a low

3/10

Roast rump of lamb

For the other main we got the roast rump of lamb. A French-inspired dishes, This was served with dauphinoise potatoes, which are cooked with milk. This dish was a joy. I absolutely loved it. The lamb was perfectly cooked and it went perfectly with the delicious potato. I just wish there was more. Flavours came from the natural ingredients on the plate and didn’t need any additional sauces

8.5/10

Desserts

Alcohol is served but, it’s technically not part of the restaurant as it comes from the hotel bar.

Staff were friendly and knowledgeable about items on the menu, in particular things like advising to order rib eye medium to allow the fat to be rendered down correctly. Little things like that make a difference to a steak novice… Not to me of course.

Decor and atmosphere were nice, it could easily be a place for date night or a celebration meal with the lads. The venue has a character and personality.

To sum up, unfortunately, the steak was a massive let down but I enjoyed the lamb rump. It was early days when I visited so I am sure there is loads of room for Improvement.

My Meal was complimentary

RockIT Steak (Closed)

1

Date of Visit: 28 February 2018 (it was cold and very snowy)

A new steakhouse in East London, no don’t roll your eyes, this one is actually a little different and also… Pretty good.

RockIT steak located near Aldgate is a new steakhouse where you can cook your own steak too, however, you like at your own table on a 400 degree hot stone. The concept of cooking your own steak is not anything new and in all honesty, I’ve never considering cooking your own steak something I liked, I’ve been to places that have this method of serving up steak and I’ve always found it to be a letdown. I like my steak cooked for me and then rested to allow the natural fats and juices to rest on the place, which enhances flavour and taste. So was expecting to be disappointed… But I was wrong and pleasantly surprised.

The venue is large and spacious with loads of seating. The menu offers a great deal of choice.

Drinks and Starters

We started the night we a couple of drinks and a seafood platter. This was ordered for me and not something I would have ordered, as I didn’t think it paired well with the rest of the food to come.

We also tried the Brie cheese wedges, really good! Deep fried Brie in breadcrumbs

Brie Wedges

Also got a side of mushroom, normally I don’t even mention the sides, but really liked this dish. Cooked really well and tasted great, mushrooms in butter, simple but yum!

Mains

For my main meal, I decided not to be brave and try the massive tomahawk steak and keep it simples with the ribeye and T-bone steak. All steaks are grass-fed and organic, which just shows another step in quality. It’s not easy to find places that supply high-grade steak at such a good price.

After cooking my steak to a medium rare I allowed it to rest in my plate for a few mins before tucking in. I was happy to find that the steak was of good quality and had loads of flavour. I’ll give myself a pat on the back and say it was down to my cooking. Based on previous experience, I was expecting it to be dry and chewy but it wasn’t. I really enjoyed the food.

I spoke with the larger than life and full of energy owner Sonny who really explained his vision, his focus on food quality and customer experience.

To sum up, I really enjoyed my experience here, I thought cooking your own steak would be a bit gimmicky as it has been on previous experiences at other places but the large open space and quality meat made it be a good experience and one that I recommend on trying with friends or family.

Dessert

Sticky Toffee Pudding and Chocolate Fudge Cake. These were really nice, no complaints here.

This place is good for groups of friends, families or anyone really. Cooking. You own steak may be slightly a novelty, but it does make going out for dinner a more interactive experiment. All the food is halal and certified.

The service was good, but I not able to give a fair assessment as the owner was dining with me for most of the meal, so It’s not like the service would ever be bad when the Boss is with you!

I was invited to visit and my meal was complimentary.

CHIK’N

Last year a new casual fried chicken restaurant opened up in Baker Street, serving up some chicken burgers that was causing some major hype, I naturally made contact to see if they were halal but was told that they were unable to find a farm that can meet their high standards. So I tried to help and made a few suggestions. They were looking for free range and organic chicken, which means a more expensive product.

Exactly a year later, a little birdy told me they have now found a halal supplier! So I headed down to checked it out.

The place is casual and fast food, it’s an order, pay and pick up buzzer system. The menu is simple, you get a choice a few burgers and there’s also a special available.

Menu

As you can see prices are not your chicken cottage prices, but as mentioned above, the quality of the chicken means its more expensive. 1 wing is the price I can get 4 for in my local!

Gangnam Style Burger £8.95

There seems to be a strong Asian theme present in the restaurant, this is a limited edition burger. a double chicken burger with Korean glaze, Sriracha sauce, double cheese and kimchi – loads of bold flavours. This burger was pretty epic and pretty hard for even my big gob to take a bite of!

Cali Hot Chick Burger £6.95

I was expecting a little more from this one, the Guacamole was basic and the flavours too subtle, the chicken was juicy for a breast piece and had good flavour.

Wings n Dat / 3 for £2.95

Okay, maybe not worth a quid for 1! But it was decent.

I’ve kept this review simple and quick, its casual fast food, great for a quick meal after work if you are meeting a mate. Defo recommend trying the limited edition burger. I also tried some of the special fries, really good, but forgot to take a photo!

Really nice to see that a restaurant tried hard to cater for halal eaters.

Halal sign in the Window, the status confirmed by staff. I paid for my meal in full.

The Great Chase

2

Date of visit, 1st Feb 2018

This is going to be an interesting one, I’ve been to The Great Chase 3 times, the first time I went was before anyone knew about The Great Chase, I discovered it on Tastecard and found out they did halal food, I went not knowing too much about it and had a GREAT meal. At the time it was only open for a few weeks, I posted about it on Instagram and it created a lot of hype and exposure. After my first visit, I went again for Brunch but didn’t enjoy the meal, I was then invited back to try some new dishes and that was a good experience, good, but not great.

After a few months, I was getting some contrasting feedback from friends and followers that the food was not very good anymore. So I decided to visit without an invitation and do an honest review.

So this review will be based SOLEY on my 4th visit and will not factor in my previous visits.

The Great Chase is a unique restaurant and differs from most halal places I’ve been to. First of all, (to my knowledge) it is the ONLY fully halal restaurant in Zone One that doesn’t serve alcohol. ( I’m not including chicken shops and takeaways) the focus is on sourcing high-quality ingredients.

The menu here is very small and changes based on seasonal availability of ingredients. Here lies one of the first issues, depending on the time of year you visit you might get a menu that’s better than visiting at another time. So on my first visit, I had the duck breast which I loved, but duck is a hard item to obtain, so it was not available when I visited.

My issue with a small menu is that I believe every dish should be on point as there is a greater attention to detail and focus due to a fewer number of items to manage.

Menu

As you can see from the Menu there’s only 3 starters and 5 mains. What I found odd, was despite that fact that this is a halal restaurant, out of 8 items on the menu only 3 were meat based. Which includes a £29 steak, Which I just don’t understand, if halal is a restaurant USP then surely there should be more meat-based offerings, If I wanted veg or seafood why would I visit here? I am all for trying to reduce the amount of non-veg we eat, but if I visit a halal British restaurant then I want to eat food that I normally get a chance to eat, due to halal options.

Small Plates

Smoked Duck Breast, £9

Smoked Duck Breast

I really did not like this at all. It had a fishy smell and taste to it for some reason. Just looking at this picture brings back unpleasant memories. I made an assumption that this would be a hot dish, but it was served cold.

3/10

Flamed Octopus

Flamed Octopus

The day before I visited a new modern tapas restaurant called Tuyo, (not had a chance to review yet) where I had an octopus dish there for £7 and it was great, so I was hoping to get something similar. The octopus was cooked well but, I didn’t think the addition of the radish and spiced apple worked in harmony.

6/10

Mains

This is where the evening just takes an unfortunate nosedive.

Chicken Breast, £18

The first time I visited my friend ordered this dish and it was good, so I had high hopes. However, on this visit was let down being served undercooked chicken, that lacked any flavour. The only good thing was the fondant potato. This dish was too simple and needs a lot more refinement.

As you can see some of the chicken is still pink and the texture was definitely of something that was undercooked.

3/10

Atlantic Cod

Looking at the menu, there was no mention of how this dish would be served up, I definitely was not expecting such a poorly made dish, presented in a broth. I found it odd that a European focused menu would throw in an Asain influenced dish.

The fish, mushrooms and parsnips got soggy very quickly, It was not what I expected. Although the fish was cooked well, there are no another positives I can give this dish. It was very average.

5/10

Verdict

Again, I have to state, if I were to review this place based on my 1st visit, it would probably score in my top 5. However, a sign of a good restaurant is consistency, it needs to try and deliver the same high standards in food every day. With such a limited and small menu, every item needs to be on point, but it just wasn’t. It seems that the feedback I got from friends and followers was correct.

I know the owner now and spoke with him at length about my experience and passed on my feedback. On this visit, the food I had was poor, and I could have had better at any other standard British restaurant that has good seafood options.

If you want top-quality British food with halal options then I recommend my number one rated review The Frog

I paid for my meal but got 50% off using a tastecard.
