Bunnychow (closed)

0

Bunny chow, referred to as a bunny, is a South African fast food dish consisting of a hollowed out loaf of bread filled with curry. It originated in the Durban Indian community.

There’s a pretty simple menu, you pick the type of bread you want, I go for the brioche as it’s sweet and light, then the filling: DURBAN BUNNY – Slow cooked mutton curry,  CHAKALAKA BUNNY – Spicy chicken and tomato and VEGGIE BUNNY – Cauliflower, chickpeas, paneer, spicy South African sauce and then the topping if your choice, slaw or coriander salad is what i either go for.

I’ve actually now been here 5 times and have tried the lamb, veg/paner and chicken. I love them all, I’d say the chicken just edges it. Each bunny I’ve had had been great, the flavours of each are brilliant, really spicy and flavoursome. It’s nice having food that’s something different.

The price is also great as well, each bunny is only £5, but if you share a picture on instagram you can grab a badge that gives you 20% off which makes it only £4. It’s a small place, good for a quick lunch or dinner if you around soho. Food arrives in no time at all so there’s not much waiting around either.

Its a very simple concept, but its a really great tasting meal and its something new and different to what you and me normally eat.

Elephant Royale

Elephant Royal, is located by a really nice part of the docklands over looking the river, so there’s plus points for the location. Inside the restaurant has a nice ambience and is spacious, with water features next to the tables where you dine.

For starters I offered prawn spring rolls and fish cakes. For Mains I went for the lamb massuman curry and lamb chops. For drinks I ordered a virgin pina colada and a Shirley temple. The food was good but not amazing. I have had far better thai food and for a lot cheaper. The prices here are very expensive for the location, i think you pay a premium for the venue over looking the river. Starters cost between £8 to £9. The curry was £12 and lamb chops £16. These prices are representing of central London. Im my opinion the food was not worth the money. The starters where not anything amazing, food is definitely fresh, i found curry lacked depth in flavour and wasn’t like other massuman curries I have had in the past.

So, overall, the atmosphere is really nice, but food and value is not worth it. Total was £64, Inc service, 2 drinks, 2 starters and 2 mains plus rice.
Chicken and lamb halal.

Quick Bite Review

So much food, i don’t think 5 people could finish all of this. Only cost £22, with salad, bread and everything you see pictured. Much better than the Turkish restaurant Wazir down the road. The Meat was of a good quality, the lamb ribs where juicy and all the meat was infused with the charcoal grill taste with a slightly oily texture. Recommended.

Roti King

0

Considered the king of Malaysian restaurants, Roti King is a small, and I mean very small family run style restaurant in Euston. It holds around 30 covers at best, but its known for its value and top quality food.

I love Malaysian food, it’s one of my favourite types of cuisine and coming here was on my list for a long time, but it was hard to find a friend to come with me as the venue, well is pretty dingy.

I headed here on a Tuesday night thinking in my wisdom that it wouldn’t be that busy at 7pm, well I was wrong. There was a queue and a wait of around 20mins with not much of a welcome, the place is so small there is just one member of waiting staff. But to be fair, there was hardly any space to move at the door.

After browsing the menu that featured a good selection of dishes I went for my standard beef rendang for main and for starters Roti Cani with daal gravy

Roti Cani is not too dissimilar than a Paratha , it is made fresh when when you walk in and pretty much a must have when eating here.

My beef rendang was very good, it was not as dry as I was expecting, it had good deep flavours and the meat was soft and tender, served in a not so thick sauce.

The venue is small and very no thrills, it’s better to say this is more of a cafe than a restaurant environment, but the food is a good high quality standard.

Like my Spicy basil for Thai, this place is about Food and value, the ambience is not existent. However, the service was better than expected, despite being the only staff on the floor, our waitress managed to give us a personal experience and help my very indecisive friend some advice on what to order without looking flustered.

C&R, Chinatown

Hidden in a alleyway just at the start of Chinatown is the unassuming looking C&R Malaysian restaurant. Looking at the place, it’s pretty simple, clean and basic looking.

At the time of writing this I’ve been here 3 times. Each food experience has been a good one. The roti cani here is very good, it looks so understated on the plate as do most dishes here, but the flavours that you try are great. This can definitely be said about the beef rendang, the presentation and appearance are not so great, but boy, it’s takes great, it’s the perfect balance of dry and moist when it comes to the sauce. You can really tell that it’s been slow cooked, reading all the great flavours of the meat and spices.

I did try my friends noodles and they were good. I prefer curries when it comes to pan Asian cuisine.

Also, i recommend the lychee drink. So yum!

Spicy Basil

0

Finally got around to visiting Spicy Basil in Kilburn. It’s been on my list for a long time as I’ve heard that’s it’s one of the top Thai places in London.

So of all, this place is not fancy.. It’s very basic and no frills. There are 2 floors, the top floor is very cafe like, small and tight with loads of people. However, there is a downstairs which is a recent addition, this area is a little more spacious and is where I ate. When I entered on a Sunday night the place was packed and buzzing. Lucky, we where shown a table without waiting.

Spicy Basil focuses on providing their customers with good quality food at a very good price. Every main is £5.50 and the curries comes with rice, so no need for those extra side orders. The red curry I had was thick, spicy and full of flavour, I really enjoyed this dish. The starters we had, especially the chicken Satay was brilliant and is now my favourite around.

Where the food and value excel, the service and overall ambience is very underwhelming. It’s all about quick turn around here, in and out no fuss. Expect you ask for cutlery or chase menus when you sit and food coming at different times. There was around a 7mins wait between the mains combining which meant I was waiting around while my friend and his wife where eating away.

So a visit to spicy Basil is definitely recommend, as the food was very good. As long as you sit downstairs and are with good company you will have a good time.

The Meat Co. (Part 1)

I like meat, then who doesn’t? I particularly like steak and like it when it’s thick, juicy and delicious. It’s also something I’ve been cooking a lot at home, due to its simplicity and price.

That’s the pointless intro here’s the review.

Meat and co formally known as meat and wine company is regarded to have the best steak in the UK and it’s a place that has long as been on my list. Recently I met a friend who is shared a passion for food and he suggested a visit to meat & Co, I didn’t need much convincing. I booked a table online for Friday night and counted the down days.

Meat and co is situated just outside Westfield Sheppards Bush, upon arrival we were shown to our table upstairs and even the halal menu.

The restaurant definitely looked expensive, the decor was of a high standard with a view into the open kitchen.

meatco3

For starters we both shared some BBQ chicken wings, these were good, a strong deep flavour and very tender, but only 3 pieces for £8.95 and I would say that I have add better, but I was not here for the chicken wings!

So on to the steak! There is a lot of choice on the menu. The steaks here are not your average halal steak, there are 2 different types of aged meats, wet and dry. Look up what each means in more detail, but in short, the process of ageing meat costs extra and releases natural flavours from the meat itself from the way the enzymes break down meat fibres.

meatco2

As you can see from the menu, different cuts and different prices. I consider myself to be a lover of good meat and I really wanted to treat myself. On the opposite page of the menu is a listing for Wagyu beef. Again, look this up, but basically Wagyu is one of the top cuts of meat you can get. Famous for  incredibly high level of fat marbling, And it’s not just any fat – this is a soft fat with a low melting point, due in part to its high proportion of monounsaturated fats. Find out more here – http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/11406635/Whats-all-the-fuss-about-Wagyu-beef.html

So here it is.

meatco6

I ordered the halal Wagyu, medium rare.

What did I think? Well I didn’t like it…. I loved it. Wow. Omg. Insert superlative here. When I cut my first piece and it entered my mouth the meat felt like it melted in the tongue. The flavours of the naturals fats and meat where incredible. It was like eating little bits of soft and tender clouds that were main from meat. It was cooked to a perfect medium rare. Im naturally a fast eater and I really savoured each mouthful. I decided to get the steak with no sauce, it’s served with a house basting of the natural juices over the meat that’s just wonderful

Honestly guys, I’m finding hard to describe how epic and awesome eating this meal was. Steak was also served with a side of chips.

So how much did this steak cost?. Well on the menu there is no price, just market value. On the day I went it was £55. Now, halal also means not spending beyond ones means and gratefully I was happy to pay this.

In most people’s book £55 is expensive for a piece of meat and there were other options that start at around £30, but it was worth the experience in my book.

meatco5

My friend had the beef burger, I can’t you how it was as I only tried a little bit and didn’t want the taste of burger to conflict with my Amazing Wagyu!

The service was very good, from the moment you walk in you are greeted by staff at the front desk, top floor, then table. Our waiter was personable, attentive and friendly, and allowed us time to order and decide what to have.

After the meal I spoke to the manager in detail about the process of the way they manage the halal meat in great detail. He spoke with us about the halal aspect and the impact halal diners have had on the restaurant.

Anyway, I had a great experience and totally recommended Meat and co as the best halal steak in London, that I’ve had hands down.

My part of the bill was £65 Inc service. No drinks shared starter.

Just another thing, I want to mention the rareness of Halal Wagyu, you can’t get it easily here. If you go to your halal butcher, you can get a 300g rump steak for £4 and its around £15 for the same thing in a restaurant. Now look up the price of Wagyu from a butcher, i found it at £70 for 2 x175g, the price is £200 per KG. Compared to £8.99 for rump steak. So my value score takes this into account.

Drunch

Bite size review

This was my first Sunday roast outside of home and it was absolutely delicious. The lamb was tender, soft and infused with deep flavours. I love the way it was cooked, the lamb just broke apart effortlessly. The yorkshire pudding was big and the potatoes and vegetables were well cooked.

My friend got the Drunch burger. They have a lovely downstairs area, complete with playstation 4 inside a cosy cave. They have a limited drinks selection however, wish they had more refreshing drinks, they don’t even have sprite on the menu.

Wazir Restaurant & Charcoal Grill

0

Quite Bite Review.

A very large Turkish kebab and grill restaurant on Cranbrook Road, Ilford. Inside there’s a very canteen budget feel to the place, loud, busy and spacious. As almost customery we were given, warm fresh bread and salad on the table. The chilli sauce was pretty good.

Pictured is the £49 special. Loads of meats and chicken on the platform as well as the choice of 4 starters. When the plate arrived at the table it’s a sight that any meat lover will be impress by, loads of different types of stuff on show.

But sadly, that joy of the sight of the epic platter that was in front of me so only vanished as I started. But that’s all I positive things I can say about this mixed grill. Pretty much everything was bland and tasteless. I wasn’t that impressed. Yes there was a lot on the plate but nothing apart from the chicken wings really stood out. The chicken shish was undercooked, with some pieces still raw and near pink inside, and having a heavily pregnant woman in the group meant that this poses a danger for her.

The lamb chops where tender and juicy, but lacked any flavour, i found myself constantly asking for extra chilli sauce as without any, the food was pretty bland and tasteslees. Good grilled food comes from slow cooking meat, allowing even distribution of heat to the meats. Whacking meat on a hot charcoal grill seems to just cook the outside and not the insides, leaving It juicy, but undercooked.
The decor and atmosphere was similar to a canteen, very big and loud, not the ideal place for a family meal. The restaurant is big and great for super large groups, i’m guessing it can cover 200. But the large area just makes it feel cheap, less intimate and personal.

Service, was rather average. They seem to suffer from being understaffed and not enough waiting staff to go around, I found it difficult to get the attention of the staff as they were not the most attentive.

Also, they have a no tap water policy.

As for value, i fed my family of 6 for 60 so that’s pretty good, but its what you expect from Large mix Grill. But a place is cheap it doesn’t make it better if food, environment and service is not up to standard

Kitchin N1

Pre warning – Im going to have a little rant.

A few years ago I visited the buffet restaurant KitchinN1 in Kings cross and wasn’t impressed then. A few years later I found myself here on a Saturday night with a group of 8 after just coming back from a 16 mile hike in Dover! So when we got back to Kings Cross we headed to KitchinN1 as it’s near and we wouldn’t have to wait long for food to arrive.

When I review a restaurant I say it how it is. I really don’t hold back.

This visit I experienced the worst customer service for a long time. All i have to say about this place is AVOID AVOID AVOID.

I’ll speak about the food, for £16.99 you have access to a small to medium range of average food. The good was the Indian curries. But its hard to recall anything else that had taste and quality. Things seemed to be restricted, the fresh grilled station customers are only permitted by small cuts of meat per visit.

But where I didn’t like this place was then service we received. From the moment we walked in I felt that we we not welcomed. The man at the door almost tried everything to put us off. He kept stating the price to everyone, then demand payment upfront and encouraged cash payments (I smell tax avoiding here). He then stated no out side drinks…pointing to bottles of water we had on us! Then after we had sat down and started eating he had the cheek to come up to us again and ask if everyone has paid or if anyone as sneaked in. I was gobb smacked. He then gave us a drinks bill for the people that ordered drinks, then 10mins later after people from the group had left he came back and gave a new bill with drinks that he forgot to add on. With no apology.

Anyway, as you can tell I’m not happy this is such a mediocre and poor restaurant. I really don’t know how it survives as it’s just below average. I do not recommend going.
