Bunny chow, referred to as a bunny, is a South African fast food dish consisting of a hollowed out loaf of bread filled with curry. It originated in the Durban Indian community.
There’s a pretty simple menu, you pick the type of bread you want, I go for the brioche as it’s sweet and light, then the filling: DURBAN BUNNY – Slow cooked mutton curry, CHAKALAKA BUNNY – Spicy chicken and tomato and VEGGIE BUNNY – Cauliflower, chickpeas, paneer, spicy South African sauce and then the topping if your choice, slaw or coriander salad is what i either go for.
I’ve actually now been here 5 times and have tried the lamb, veg/paner and chicken. I love them all, I’d say the chicken just edges it. Each bunny I’ve had had been great, the flavours of each are brilliant, really spicy and flavoursome. It’s nice having food that’s something different.
The price is also great as well, each bunny is only £5, but if you share a picture on instagram you can grab a badge that gives you 20% off which makes it only £4. It’s a small place, good for a quick lunch or dinner if you around soho. Food arrives in no time at all so there’s not much waiting around either.
Its a very simple concept, but its a really great tasting meal and its something new and different to what you and me normally eat.
