Swiss Butter is opening its second London restaurant in South Kensington, and diners are being welcomed from today, 7 November. It’s one of the most talked-about halal spots in the capital, best known for its viral steak and that signature sauce, so this one is going to get busy.
The new site is at 128 Gloucester Road, SW7 4SF, a short walk from Gloucester Road station. An official launch follows in December, so expect the early days to be a bit of a soft opening.

If you haven’t been before, the concept is very simple. There’s no sprawling menu. You choose beef, chicken or salmon, and it comes with fries, a fresh side salad and the Swiss Butter sauce, the creamy buttery mustard sauce the whole place is built around. The brand was founded by entrepreneur Eddy Massaad, and it has been expanding quickly: the first Paris restaurant opened last month.

I reviewed the Holborn branch when it was at its peak hype. The steak is cooked to order and arrives swimming in that sauce, and for the price it’s a good entry point if you’re after a steak without a big bill. I wasn’t a fan of the queue or the service on my visit, so my advice is the same as it was then: go when the initial buzz has died down, and expect a wait if you turn up at peak times. A second London site might help spread the crowds, though a new opening will be busy at first.
One thing worth knowing is that Swiss Butter serves alcohol. At Holborn all the food is halal, with the beef sourced from Brazil and certificates available, but alcohol is on the menu. I’ll update this post once I’ve checked the halal certificate and drinks policy at South Kensington, so ask the team when you visit if it matters to you.
