La Sophia, Noting Hill

La Sophia is a Halal French/Mediterranean restaurant near Westbourne Park, It has been on my radar for a while now as it seemed like a unique concept. It used to be on tastecard however due to the recent rise in popularity I guess they took themselves off. Regardless to say I was looking forward to something different than my usual.

Lets start with the basics –

The main floor is very cosy and intimate, dimly lit by candlelight creating a romantic ambiance accompanied by the solo Guitarist playing live Music added to the mood, most of the diners where young couples on date night, our loud group of 8 didn’t really go with the furniture.

There is a larger downstairs area which is more of a moroccan vibe due to the decor, this would definately would have been better for our large group. Our table was seated right next to the entrance which meant there was a VERY chilly cold draft of wind every time people would enter/exit. This meant I had to get up around 6 times during Dinner to close the outer door to stop the cold air coming in.

However, for a Friday night the restaurant was rather sparse and the reason is probably the location.. Its not ideal to say the least, off a main high road and it took me nearly 2 hours to get there in Friday night rush hour traffic from North East London.

On to the main course….(of the review)

I decided to opt for the set menu which did have some good choices from the La Carte menu, as you know I’m a meat guy, so I went straight for the meat dishes. La Sophia is known for serving Rabbit, but all I could do is picture a cute little bunny so I opted for the Flame-grilled ribeye steak, roasted new potato & bearnaise sauce as a main course and for starters I ordered Lamb shoulder croquette, on bed of soft herbs, cherry tomato salad and mustard aioli. (sounds fancy)

Starter

Thumbs up for presentation, it looked good. As starters goes it tasted nice, I missed the croquette part on the menu and didn’t realise i was getting a small bread crumbed fried food roll filled with mashed potatoes and Lamb.

Main

There are moments during a meal that make or break one’s dining experience, the moment I took my first bite of steak…mine was ruined. I asked my steak to be cooked medium rare with some pink in the middle. What I got was a undercooked, tasteless, uninspired and unflavoured piece of meat. There was absolutely ZERO taste and flavour, I imagine if you cooked unseasoned bit of rubber is would be the same. I really couldn’t believe how bad it was. It was juicy, but combined with the under cooking and disappearance of seasoning of any kind I was left with bit of animal flesh on a plate surrounded with poor presentation of potatoes and 2 slices of carrot http://emeraldcarpetcleaning.ie. I then had to request a Steak Knife from our waiter, It should have been given before the meal. At least he was friendly and had a good attitude.

Something happened on this night for the first time I never finished a meal, I always finish my food and especially if it’s steak, however on this occasion the food was so awful that I couldn’t force myself to take another bite. It was the worst steak I’ve ever had. Perhaps its the French way of cooking or maybe my taste palate isn’t sophisticated enough to detect minute elements of flavour… Honestly I can’t get over how bad it was.

Now I’m the kind of person that doesn’t do the polite British thing and not say anything, I was in a right mood, this tasteless meal really put a downer on my night, at least I was with good company to cheer me up.

The Drinks menu was also very limited, they did have “Halal/non-alcoholic” wine but I passed as someone said it wasn’t very good

The bill came to around £25 as I had the 2 course set menu for £19.50 + £4 extra for steak. I wished I came here using a 2 for 1 discount maybe then it would have worth it.

Final thoughts, maybe I ordered the wrong thing, you can check it out for yourself but as the French say this place was c’est terrible.

Kervan Sofrasi

I’ve found myself in the past few weeks eating a lot of meat, which in don’t mind as I’m a guy that likes my grilled chicken, lamb et Al.

I decided to take my parents and brother to a restaurant on a Saturday night and decided to head to kervan, which is a turkish restaurant that has been going for some time.

We arrived with no booking and where given a table for 4 in 5mins or so. The place was very busy, not a spare seat going. It had a very Saturday night hustle and bustle vibe. The decor is somewhat rustic and had a almost vintage 70s style from the bright incandescent lighting, mustard walls and the water feature in the corner.

The service staff seemed like part of a machine, it was very systematic, the table was set very quickly with bread, salad and some unidentifiable vegetable thing. We didn’t spend much time looking at by he menu as I knew what I wanted to order, the kervan special one. Almost a statement dish in many similar restaurants, it’s basically a platter or mountain of meat laid upon a bed of rice and couscous, tho in this case it was less of a mountain and more a small hill.

The food took around 20mins to arrive and to be honest I was a little disappointed and expected more food. However, I thought looks may be deceiving and tucked in. I started with lamb chops, or should I say chop, as there were only 2. These were small but really juicy and tasty, then moved on to the chicken cubes and wings.

Despite the fact I was with a party of 4, (it’s more a group of 3 as my mother eats the same amount as a 3 year old) we finished all of the food, which surprised me as we are not a family of big eaters and I was hoping to take some away for home.

I was left underwhelmed with the food experience, it wasn’t anything special, especially if you visit any of the places on Green Lanes. I felt apartment from the lamb chops nothing was memorable, it lacked any impact with taste or flavour. Another point was the Ribs where really small with hardly any meat on the bone.

No service charge is added.

This is easily now one of the best generic arab/middle eastern places i’ve been to. This visit falls in the middle of me finding myself eating out at 3 arab restaurants 3 days in a row.

Myself and a friend came here for a pre-theater dinner. Good think we made a reservation as this place had a queue when we sat down.

The inside is really simple but the decor does house many middle eastern influences and features.

The menu as a wide range of food, from cold/warm starters, mains, grills and more.
We ordered a few starters i ordered a main. The portions are big, you get loads for your money here and Chill sauce was yum!

What i liked was the service, i ordered a Lemon and Mint blended juice it was brilliant, i asked for some sugar and i got a plate, with napkin, spoon and sugar : i liked that.

I actually ordered the wrong main, i also go for lamb shish but got lamb kebab but i got loads of kebab. £3.50 for grilled chicken wings! yes please.

Great place, i’d travel from east london just for this place.

This place gets a lot of mixed reviews. I have been a few times and have contrasting experiences and overall views on each visit. One of the main reasons that could affect your experience is where are seated and the time of week you visit. There are 3 floors to this very large and Moroccan themed restaurant and bar. The traditional and authentic Decor adds to the experience and atmosphere of being in a foreign land. There are 3 levels, a top floor balcony style area, the large main floor and the low light basement style cave.

The seats downstairs are very small and the table is low which means your knees are hitting the table and is rather uncomfortable. You have to keep leaning forward to get your food, people with a bad back you have been warned!

As for the food it can be best described as average and some what disappointing. Most food lacks flavour and the quality of meats tends to be poor. Again, its hit and miss. I know my arab food well, the best test of any place is how good the chicken wings are, if you can’t get that right you might be in trouble. Here the wings where “just okay” nothing to shout about. A few points are scored on presentation. I’m having hard time recalling on how good the food i ordered was as i came here on my birthday last year. (Sept 12) It was with a group of 8 , I ordered the Lamb Cutlets and well again the word disappointing comes to mind, it just lacked any imagination or taste. Not very memorable – which is why im finding it hard to talk about the food. This place is mainly for the experience, one of these experiences is the Belly Dancing.

Another area that needs improvement is service and staff attitude, theres 2 extremes, either food takes too long or they bring starters and mains out together.

Like many diners i used my tastecard and got 50% off the food, i wouldn’t even consider eating here if it wasn’t for my trusty tastecard.

Food – 3
Atmosphere – 4.5
Service – 3
Value – 3.5

Mint Leaf

Date of Visit – 9/10/13 8pm

Hidden below the in a basement below the streets of Piccadilly lies Mint Leaf and “upmarket” indian restaurant. Upon walking downstairs you are greeted by the hostess in a large reception area along with a strong hit of scented incense candles. I was dining with a party of four and was shown to our table, the restaurant is dimly lit to create a nice atmosphere of elegance with a hint of slight pretentiousness, but i overall had good first impressions. You walk along a catwalk. past the bar and walls padded with leather and wooden trim. The Seats at our table was more comfortable small sofa chairs which i liked. The decor is contemporary but what i liked was there was a lot of space and things didn’t feel cramped and it created a nice relaxed atmosphere.

I ordered a Lemon+Mint mocktail, not bad for £6, loads of flavour but i’ve had better. For starters I went for the Grill Prawns but also had my friends Lamb Chop, click now and see more. Portions are very small, i was rather shocked to see the tiny lamb chops, that would even look at of place in a kids meal, but i guess this is standard which “fancy” places.

Mains, i ordered the Lamb Methi, but also tried the unique and different biryani along with the classic chicken jalfrezi. I did ask for my Lamb dish to be made spicy, and it was. There was a good blend of heat and flavour, it was a thick based curry and the pieces of meat were not bad. Overall, did i like the food, I did, my liked my main, despite the portion sizes were on the small size i didn’t leave feeling hungry or full, so just right.

The service from start to finish was good, the waiter was attentive and polite, what also was good was they gave us individual bills when we asked for the meal to be split between 4 which was a nice touch.

Price wise the bill was £25pp, which included drinks, starters and main. This included a 50% discount of food with tastecard. So not bad at all for a upmarket restaurant. Where this place scores points is the atmosphere and service. Value without a 50% is not worth it all! Giving this a overall 4.. only because i give too many 3.5s!

Chicken and Lamb were verbally said as being Halal
